- Abstract
- This report explores women’s transformative leadership in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on equipping young women with the skills and opportunities needed to lead meaningful change. Commissioned by The Mastercard Foundation, it examines barriers to leadership such as gender inequality, limited access to education, and cultural constraints. The report defines transformative leadership as value-based, rooted in ethics, and aimed at addressing inequities to improve lives. It assesses existing leadership programs across Africa and identifies significant gaps—most programs are underfunded, short-term, and lack focus on ethics or gender. The study highlights successful models like the Moremi Initiative and Akina Mama we Africa while calling for expanded, youth-focused leadership training. Key recommendations include embedding leadership development into formal education, promoting mentorship, and supporting lifelong learning. Ultimately, the report calls for integrated policy and programmatic approaches to cultivate a new generation of African women leaders committed to social and economic transformation.
