- Abstract
- This OpEd, written by Reeta Roy, centres on reforming universities to become "beacons of social justice". Citing Scholar Nonduduzo Ndlovu, the sources argue that many bright young African minds are left behind not due to incapacity, but due to their environment; therefore, the educational system must nurture abilities, creativity, and innovation. Universities must develop the next generation of transformative leaders equipped to tackle major global issues. To achieve this paradigm shift, three key actions are recommended: institutions must be made inclusive and representative of their communities; programs must be designed to meet students’ specific challenges and life contexts; and young people’s deep sense of purpose to improve others’ lives must be nurtured. Ultimately, universities should measure scholars by their natural abilities, not solely their academic performance.
