Abstract
This article, commissioned by The Mastercard Foundation, outlines their Rural and Agricultural Finance Strategy for Sub-Saharan Africa. It highlights the significant financial exclusion of rural smallholder farmers despite increased access to financial services in other areas. The Foundation believes that expanding access to appropriate financial services is crucial for improving their well-being and enabling them to increase their productivity and incomes. The article discusses the challenges in reaching these farmers, including physical distance and their limited interaction with financial institutions. The strategy focuses on supporting financial service providers to develop tailored products like credit with flexible repayment and savings services, as well as exploring the role of technology and informal savings groups. The Foundation has also established the Fund for Rural Prosperity to support innovation in this sector and is guided by a learning agenda to identify effective approaches . Ultimately, the goal is to foster a robust financial service landscape that meets the unique needs of rural clients and contributes to poverty reduction.
