Abstract
Commissioned by the Varkey Foundation, this literature review is one component of a wide-ranging study on the education of school teachers in sub-Saharan Africa. It provides theoretical background which culminates into an Overview Report. The Overview Report is one of 13 background papers prepared for the Mastercard Foundation report, Secondary Education in Africa: Preparing Youth for the Future of Work. This paper focuses on two related issues: pre-service training and in-service training.
