This report created by Access to Finance Rwanda, in partnership with the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion, and the Mastercard Foundation, consists of the first-ever thematic “Gender and Access to Finance” report of the country’s 2024 FinScope. The Rwanda FinScope survey has been run every four years since 2008, informing policy interventions and financial products. The thematic report on Gender and Access to Finance sheds light on the progress in financial inclusion and opportunities to bridge the gap even further.
The 2024 Rwanda FinScope interviewed 13,994 households, targeting populations aged 16 years and above, with a 71% rural population sample size. The surveyed population have varying education attainment levels - 52% with only primary education attainment, 27% with secondary education attainment, 5% with tertiary education, and 1% with only vocational training. Education attainment affects financial literacy. The majority of the respondents work in the informal sector - 35% female, 37% male, 11% are business owners and only 5% female vs 7% male work for the formal sector.
