Abstract
This paper examines two pilot projects targeted to women in extreme poverty in West Bengal, India and Sindh, Pakistan. The pilots in question are based on a successful intervention by BRAC, a larger non-government organization (NGO) in Bangladesh, to address the multiple constraints embodied in the intersection between gender and extreme poverty. This analysis of the pilots, which adapted this intervention in West Bengal and Sindh, is organized around the “critical moments” framework developed in Kabeer (2008).
