Abstract
In order to better understand the impact on farmers’ lives in a more holistic manner, in 2014 One Acre Fund initiated a “Quality of Life” study. This longitudinal study followed cohorts of 1AF farmers in both Kenya and Rwanda (the largest country programs) and examined their outcomes across a broad section of their lives – including health, education, nutrition and financial literacy – compared to changes which occur for a control group in a similar area. In addition to this difference-in-difference study design, the study uses propensity score matching to analyze outcomes over a highly similar sample. Both techniques intend to mitigate selection bias which comes from comparing farmers who self-selected into the program with those who have not.
