- Abstract
- This document recounts the Foundation’s formation and early evolution, as a Narrative History. Endowed in 2006 with MasterCard’s IPO shares, the Mastercard Foundation became one of the largest private foundations in the world. Initially focusing on microfinance and youth education, the Foundation emphasized innovation, evaluation, and deep partnerships. Its independent Canadian base, unique funding model, and strategic philanthropy helped it shift from a startup to a major global funder. By 2011, its programs had matured, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, supporting scalable, high-impact initiatives to empower youth and communities economically.
