Abstract
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at FAWE Rwanda aims to educate the next generation of African women leaders by supporting academically promising girls from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Implemented by FAWE Rwanda, the program provides comprehensive scholarships and support in upper secondary school. A baseline survey of the inaugural 2014 cohort of 249 Scholars revealed that they are typically high-achieving students from impoverished rural areas, with strong national examination scores and a median age of 174. These Scholars have high aspirations for university education (99%) and a strong commitment to community service. The research, conducted by Mathematica Policy Research, will use this baseline data to evaluate the program's impact by comparing the Scholars to a non-selected group. Early findings also highlight the Scholars' positive attitudes and the supportive learning environment provided by program schools.
