Abstract
This paper addresses a basic question for rural development and poverty alleviation: how sustainable are benefits from agricultural extension programs for smallholder women farmers? In doing so it introduced a novel research method, a randomized phase-out (or reverse-randomized control trial), designed to identify the causal impact of the removal of some or all components of an intervention. The context is the phase-out of an agricultural extension program for smallholder women farmers operated in Uganda since 2009 by the NGO BRAC.
