Abstract
This report explores the gender disparities in employment and entrepreneurship among youth in Kenya, particularly focusing on the barriers that disproportionately affect young women. Despite near-equal labor force participation rates between young women and men, women face higher unemployment, underemployment, and are more concentrated in informal, lower-paying sectors. The report categorizes barriers into individual, proximate, and structural, highlighting factors such as limited access to education, financial resources, and persistent social norms. COVID-19 has further deepened these inequalities, especially for women in vulnerable sectors. The study provides recommendations to bridge the gender gap, including promoting tertiary and STEM education for women, enhancing access to finance, reducing time poverty through childcare solutions, and creating gender-inclusive policies. It emphasizes that systemic, gender-sensitive approaches are essential for improving youth employment outcomes and fostering equitable economic participation in Kenya.
