Abstract
This white paper explores the transformative potential of super platforms—large, cross-sector digital platforms like Alibaba, Tencent, Google, and Amazon—in shaping inclusive digital economies. Funded by the Mastercard Foundation, the FIBR project emphasizes a “pull” approach, using digital interactions at local touchpoints to expand access to financial and economic services for low-income populations. The paper analyzes the rise of super platforms, particularly in China, where platforms such as Alipay and WeChat Pay have driven financial innovation and inclusion. It projects their likely emergence in Africa, given increasing mobile connectivity and digital payment adoption. While offering immense opportunity, their arrival also presents challenges for incumbent financial institutions, regulators, and policymakers. The paper argues that super platforms redefine customer centricity and financial inclusion—not as standalone goals, but as integral components of broader digital ecosystems. Ultimately, it calls for proactive policy and innovation to ensure super platforms enhance rather than disrupt inclusive financial services in emerging markets.
