Abstract
The Kenya Ecosystem Review 2015 is a white paper by Mercy Corps’ AgriFin Accelerate program, supported by the Mastercard Foundation. It explores how digital financial services (DFS) can improve the livelihoods of Kenya’s smallholder farmers (SHFs), who often lack access to credit, insurance, and market information. Despite advances like M-PESA, most SHFs rely on informal finance and face major challenges including low productivity, limited infrastructure, and exclusion from high-value markets. The report maps the digital ecosystem, identifies service gaps, and recommends bundled digital and non-financial services tailored to farmers’ diverse needs, especially for women and youth, to drive financial inclusion and agricultural growth.
