Abstract
The report Counting Change: How Youth Manage Their Money examines the financial lives of young people in Senegal, Niger, and Sierra Leone through a year-long Financial Diaries study. It explores how youth earn, save, and spend money, the financial tools they use—especially Youth Savings and Loan Associations (YSLAs)—and how their behavior is influenced by gender, geography, and life cycle. The study highlights youth’s creativity in managing money despite limited access to formal financial services, and stresses the importance of youth-centered, seasonal, and accessible financial products.
