Abstract
This paper assesses the short-run impact of BRAC Uganda’s Agriculture and Livestock Program on farm practices and productivity among rural farmers. The program provides training on modern crop cultivation, distributes agricultural inputs, and delivers vaccination and artificial insemination services for poultry and livestock. The study uses propensity score matching (PSM) to compare participants with a matched control group. Overall, the findings show a statistically significant increase in the use of improved seeds and vaccination services by participants. Line-sowing cultivation increased, while mixed-cropping decreased. Positive spillover effects were observed for the adoption of modern technologies like improved seeds and line sowing. However, no significant short-run impact was found on commercialization or self-reported welfare, although participants had smaller monthly food expenditures. The study suggests that while the program encourages the adoption of modern technology, longer-term impacts on productivity and welfare may be forthcoming.
