- Abstract
- This article, published on March 15, 2021, highlights KaziTu, a Nairobi start-up co-founded by Mastercard Foundation Scholars Sarah Lebu, Kwinoja Kapiteni, and Chidi Uwaeme, connects talented artisans from informal settlements to hiring companies. Prior to the pandemic, they had facilitated over 500 job matches. When COVID-19 struck, orders plummeted as non-essential businesses closed down. KaziTu adapted by pivoting the business to purchase and distribute hygiene and care packages (including soap and sanitizer) to households. They contracted their existing workforce for these deliveries, providing training and protective equipment. This successful shift resulted in over 1,200 delivery trips, keeping 50 percent of their workers engaged and earning essential income during the lockdown.
