- Abstract
- This article, published September 9, 2024, details the impactful work of Tracy Ahumuza and her organization, the ATTA Breastmilk Community, based in Uganda. The article explains that Ahumuza founded ATTA after the tragic death of her own daughter, Alyssa, who needed life-saving breastmilk, or "liquid gold," which was unavailable to her. ATTA began by facilitating safe milk sharing through donor testing, and later progressed to purchasing a small pasteurizer to achieve the "gold standard" in milk banking, primarily serving pre-term and medically fragile newborns. Furthermore, ATTA provides crucial training and education to health workers, advocates for milk banking, and promotes extended breastfeeding, having dispensed roughly 600 liters of donor milk to over 400 babies to date. Ahumuza’s ongoing efforts are supported by her studies as a Mastercard Foundation Scholar and have led to ATTA's knowledge being shared with Uganda's Ministry of Health.
