- Abstract
- This article, published on December 6, 2024, details the work of Makka Abdula and the Tawfiq Girls Champions in Kilifi County, Kenya, as they combat gender-based violence (GBV) and empower women. The article explains how Makka, inspired by GBV training from GROOTS Kenya, established a group of young women who, despite initial community resistance, successfully advocated for their inclusion in community discussions and business ventures. Crucially, the group received support through the Jasiri Fund, a collaboration involving the Mastercard Foundation, enabling them to start a profitable farming and water supply business, providing both economic independence and the resources to offer First Responder and paralegal training to GBV survivors. The source also includes background information on the Mastercard Foundation's programmes and focus areas, such as the EleV initiative for Indigenous youth and work in Digital, Health, and Education.
