- Abstract
- This article, published on May 15, 2025, discusses how the creative sector has emerged as sub-Saharan Africa's next goldmine and most dynamic growth area, contributing nearly 4% of the region’s GDP and accounting for 8.2% of all jobs. Despite generating billions, the sector systematically marginalizes women through systemic gender biases and unequal access to opportunities. Gender inequity persists because creativity is often viewed as a masculine domain, resulting in a gender pay gap and undervaluation of women’s contributions. Women creatives face cultural taboos, resistance from male colleagues, pressure to juggle professional work with gender roles, and pervasive sexual harassment. Overcoming these barriers requires addressing societal norms and providing better access to funding and mentorship.
