Abstract
This document presents findings from a 2016 benchmark study of 1,009 smallholder farmers in Central and Western Kenya. The study covers farmer demographics, noting that 51% were female. It examines land cultivation, highlighting that most farmers own their land and that males older than 30 cultivate the largest parcels. Farm inputs are the highest expenditure, and farmers engage in mixed cropping and livestock rearing. The report also details selling and consumption patterns, income from farming and other activities, and the use of remittances primarily for basic consumption. Mobile money is the main channel for sending and receiving money. The study further explores phone ownership and usage, saving habits, loan access and usage, uptake of insurance, access to agricultural advisory services, and the main challenges faced by farmers, notably weather, pests, and diseases.
