The December 8, 2008, Board Meeting included approval of previous board minutes, conflict of interest policy, governance and nominations charter, investment committee updates, and a review of the 2009-2011 strategic plan. The meeting also discussed microfinance grants to CARE Canada and the Aga Khan Foundation, technology research findings, and communications strategies.
The strategic plan for 2009-2011 aims to establish the Foundation in the microfinance sector, launch a youth education program, and position the Foundation as a leader in the intersection of microfinance and youth education. The Foundation plans to commit $115 million by 2011, focusing on expanding access to microfinance, building capacity, and leveraging technology. The Foundation will also develop a youth education strategy, learn from peer foundations, and establish relationships with thought leaders.
The meeting included a discussion on the impact of the global financial crisis on microfinance institutions (MFIs) and strategies to mitigate risks, such as increasing reserves, focusing on portfolio quality, and improving asset and liability management. It emphasized the Foundation's commitment to innovative microfinance and youth education programs, strategic partnerships, and effective governance to achieve its mission of improving the quality of life for economically active poor people and youth worldwide.
